Dec 3  6 pm  The Risks of Transporting Bakken Crude Oil by Rail  Crane Library, 633 Elmwood Ave Buffalo NY by Charley Bowman
In spite of the ongoing derailments, spills and explosions, trains continue to carry explosive Bakken shale crude oil throughout the US and Canada, including Upstate New York State and Buffalo. In July 2013, such a train derailed and exploded, killing 47 people and leveling much of Lac Megantic Quebec's downtown infrastructure. Since then there have been 13 other crude oil train derailments in North America -- plus two in the past week.
It's not a matter of if, but when such a train will derail in the Empire State.

Charley will discuss Lac Megantic's ongoing recovery and the little noticed risk crude-by-rail transport poses to New York State's precious aquifers -- some providing drinking water to thousands of NY State residents.
